Oral Cancer Screening

Oral Cancer Screening

Every year, around 54,000 people are diagnosed with oral cancer. The good news is, if found early, it’s very curable. Your dentist may perform an oral cancer screening as part of your routine visit. He will look for white or red patches and sores inside your mouth, as these are one of the main signs of oral cancer.

Take note, however, that a lot of people have abnormal mouth sores that are non-cancerous. So, if your dentist sees an unusual sore, he may recommend a biopsy.

Who Needs Oral Cancer Screening?

Just about anyone can benefit from an oral cancer examination, but those at high risk of mouth cancer stand to benefit more. A patient is considered high risk if any of the following applies:

  • Tobacco use
  • Heavy alcohol use
  • A prior oral cancer diagnosis

During your dental visit, you can ask your dentist if an oral cancer screening is necessary. For more information, call (239) 939-7070 to schedule an appointment with us.
